Remove any OpenCart software from the computer and website that you are going to be working with. It is often best to make this site, or at least the shopping-cart portion of it, inaccessible while you are working so customers will not lose their work.
Download the latest version of OpenCart from the official OpenCart website's download page. (See Resource one). Click 'Save to computer' and save the file to your desktop.
Open the FTP program supported by your website. Upload all of the files and folders found under the 'Upload' folder within the files you just downloaded to your website. Make sure that the files image/, image/cache/, cache/, download/, config.php and admin/config.php grant read and write permissions when you upload them.
Upload your MySQL database with a username and password already assigned to it.
Visit your website's home page using your internet browser and sign in using the MySQL username and password that you created. Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the installation of OpenCart.
Delete the installation directory from your web uploads after OpenCart has been completely installed.
Upgrading Without Uninstalling
Determine which version of OpenCart you are currently running. Right click the exe or other OpenCart files on your web server and select Properties to see which version you are running.
Go to the OpenCart official download page and upgrade your OpenCart software one step at a time. Download the version that came immediately after your current version.
Open the Upgrade notes for the version you just downloaded and replace the specified files in your current version with the files directed from the upgrade notes (See Resource 2). Continue doing this for each version that came after your current version until your OpenCart software is up to date.
