According to customer case studies, a database administrator can manage over 65 critical SQL server databases, while Oracle requires one administrator per 15 critical databases. Critical databases can be defined as systems vital to the operation of a company. With all databases and sub-databases included in the study, one Microsoft SQL database administrator can manage 214 databases, while Oracle handles only 31 databases per administrator.
Problem Resolution and Tuning
Alinean claims that Microsoft SQL Server administrators spend less time problem solving and tuning than Oracle database administrators. On average, Oracle administrators spend 33 percent of their time on these tasks, while SQL server administrators only spend 18 percent.
Installation and Configuration
SQL Server is said to be more user friendly and less time-consuming to install than Oracle. SQL Server database administrators spend 1.5 hours on average setting up a new database server, while the same task takes Oracle administrators approximately six hours.
Lower Administration Costs
Companies utilizing SQL Server spend less money on administration per database than those who run on Oracle, according to Alinean's study.
Better Security
Microsoft claims that SQL Server comes with better security options than Oracle. Oracle is said to only provide basic security in standard and enterprise editions, and offers expensive add-on security only with its enterprise edition. On the other hand, SQL Server includes extra security features in its work group, standard and enterprise editions.
More Features
SQL Server has advanced and integrated enterprise features such as advanced compression, data mining, partitioning, OLAP, enterprise reporting and spatial included in the package, while Oracle users have to purchase these as add-ons.
