Open Internet Explorer. Click the cursor in the address bar. Delete or clear the existing address.
Type 'ftp://' in the address bar, which is the protocol for FTP server access.
Type the IP address after the FTP protocol in this fashion: 'ftp://123.456.789.123' or 'ftp://ftp.fakeexample.com.' Press the 'Enter' key on your keyboard. Wait for another dialog box to open independent of the IE browser, labeled with the name 'Log On As.'
Type in the FTP server's 'User name' and 'Password.' Remove the checkmark from 'Log-on anonymously' if it is checked. Click the 'OK' button to authenticate access.
Click the folders that appear in the left or right pane to browse the contents on the FTP server.

Download, install and run an FTP server program from the App Store on the iPad. The store has several free apps to choose from, and they are all compatible with the FTP protocol.
Open a Web browser on the laptop computer.
Type 'ftp://ipad-IP' without the quotes into the address bar. Replace 'ipad-IP' with the actual IP address of the iPad. For example, type 'ftp://192.168.1.3' and then press 'Enter.'
Drag-and-drop files between the laptop computer and the iPad to transfer data.

How to Set Up a Secure FTPIn Feburary 2016 08,

Download and install WinSCP. (See Resources.) Double-click the desktop icon once installation is complete. Click 'Session.' Enter your FTP address and then the login details. Click 'File protocol' and select 'Secure (SFTP).' Click 'Login.' You have now set up a secure FTP connection.
Download and install Core FTP LE. (See Resources.) There is a 'Pro' version of this available for more advanced data connection types, but you have to pay for it. The free version allows SFTP. Click 'Start,' 'All Programs,' then 'Core FTP' to open the program. Click 'File,' then 'Sites.' Enter your FTP login details and click to enable 'SFTP.' Click 'Login.'
Download and install FileZilla. (See Resources.) FileZilla is cross-platform and freeware. The program will open after installation. Click 'File,' then 'Site Manager.' Create a 'New Site' and fill in the details. Click 'Server Type' drop-down menu and select 'SFTP' to enable the secure connection. Click 'Connect' to create the connection.
