Find the FTP address of the remote file, including the file's complete path. (If you are clicking through a link on a Web site, you will not need to know the path, since the Webmaster will have coded this into the link.)
Enter the FTP address in the browser address box, the same way you would enter an HTTP (Web) address. For example, your FTP address might be something like this: ftp://ftp.simtel.net/freeware/myfile.zip.
Press the Enter key.
Enter any ID information or passwords that you may have been assigned, if prompted. Some Web sites may be set up so you are not required to enter passwords or log-in IDs.
Choose the Save File to Disk option if given the choice between that and Open File.
Identify the folder on your hard drive where you want the downloaded file to be stored. Accept the default or choose another folder.
Wait while the file downloads to your hard disk.

What Is the Root Folder in Go Daddy?In Feburary 2016 30,
In Feburary 2016 30,
Your website’s index.html page, also known as the home page, is the main page within the root directory. Internet search engines, domain registering services and related Web services all refer to the index.html page as the gateway to your website and its related pages. If you delete your Go Daddy account’s index.html file, your website will not launch when someone enters its domain name in an Internet browser.
Secondary Pages
Your Go Daddy’s root folder contains any secondary pages linked to the index.html page. Secondary pages may contain information about you or your business, pages with photo or video galleries, pages with contact information and/or external links or pages containing additional information related to your website. Your root folder can even contain pages that are not linked to the index.html page.
Images and Videos
In addition to the index.html and secondary pages, the root folder also contains any images and videos that are part of your website’s pages. The image and video files are linked to the pages using hyperlinks. If you make changes to any of your website’s images and videos, you must upload the new version of the files to your Go Daddy root folder before the changes are reflected on your website.
Additional Elements
Your Go Daddy’s root folder may also hold files and folders that may or may not be viewable by guests to website. These files and folders may include databases holding information collected about your website, guest book data files, folders containing pages you haven’t launched yet. You can also use your root folder as a backup directory by uploading files from your computer to the root folder, if desired.
Accessibility
Anyone can view your Go Daddy’s root folder using any Internet browser by entering your website’s Internet Protocol address, also known as the IP address. Visitors can see your root folder’s pages, folders and other files. You can restrict individuals from seeing your root folder by creating a false domain name and linking it to your Go Daddy IP address via “Domain Management.” You must log in to your Go Daddy “Account Manager” and access the “Web Hosting” link and then click “Launch” to navigate to the Domain Management utility. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the restriction process.

How Does Chat Work?In Feburary 2016 23,
In Feburary 2016 23,
Internet chat has evolved quite a bit from its original inception, but the basic premise of chatting remains the same. Users at different computers are able to connect to each other, using either a web browser or a dedicated program to serve as a go-between for the chat participants' computers. Chatting often allows multiple users to connect at the same time, though some chat programs may limit the total number of users who can be connected at once. There are two main forms of chatting that you will find; browser-based chat rooms that don't require dedicated software to run, and those chat clients and instant messengers which are dedicated programs on their own.
Browser-Based Chat Rooms
Browser-based chat rooms come in a number of different forms. There are simple HTML chats that refresh themselves automatically in order to display messages that were posted since the previous refresh. Then you have Java or Flash-based chat rooms that update the conversation in real-time. Regardless of the type of update system that a chat room uses, the way that it functions remains basically the same. The chat room is hosted on a web server, and users connect to the server in a manner similar viewing a web page. The users don't connect directly to each other in most cases, but instead simply receive the updates from the server that show what everyone else has typed or posted in the chat. This allows users to interact with each other without opening up their computer to a direct connection with an unknown person. If an error occurs with the server that the chat room is hosted on, the room will be unavailable until the error is resolved.
Instant Messaging and Chat Clients
Instant messaging programs and dedicated chat clients work in a similar manner to chat rooms, though there is no web-based interface involved. Though these programs and chat clients may be focused on small conversations and occasional file transfers, there is still a server which acts as a go-between for the participants. Each message which is sent travels first to the server that the chat client or program is connected to, and from there it is sent to the appropriate recipient's computer. The server acts more as a routing agent than a host, with much of the functionality of the chat coming from the software installed on the users' computers. Should an error occur with the central server, users may be disconnected from the chat network or some messages may not be received.

Can I Load to Google's FTP Site?In Feburary 2016 21,
In Feburary 2016 21,
Though you can upload small files to Google Docs and Google Merchant Center accounts through the regular Google website interface, you need FTP to upload any files larger than 20MB, with a maximum file size of 1GB.
Browser FTP
To upload with FTP, you need an FTP program. There are two types: browser uploaders and standalone FTP programs. In Firefox, either install the Firefox Universal Uploader (Fireuploader) add-on, or go to 'Tools,' then 'Add-ons' and search for other FTP uploaders. You can search the add-ons or plugins marketplace of any browser for an FTP uploader that supports Google. Add-ons and plugins are free to install, and create an FTP interface in your browser's toolbar.
Standalone FTP
Another option is a standalone FTP program on your computer. The benefit here is that you can also use it to upload website files from your computer to any Web host. If you manage several websites, an FTP program lets you organize your accounts in one program. Cyberduck is a free FTP program that supports Google for Mac. Search Google for free or paid FTP programs, and look for one that supports Google Docs and Merchant Center.
Access
Whether you use a browser FTP plugin or a standalone FTP program, you simply log into your Google account to upload files. For example, in Fireuploader, click on the program icon and enter your username and password into the 'Add/Edit user' dialog box that opens. The process is the same with other programs. Most FTP programs allow you to store multiple accounts, so just click on the account name next time you want to FTP to your Google account. From there, drag and drop files from your computer to the FTP program to upload them to Google's site.

Slow Transfer Speeds with TeamViewerIn Feburary 2016 20,
In Feburary 2016 20,
Both your Internet speed and the recipient's Internet speed determine how quickly a file transfers between computers. On your end, as the sender, the speed is determined by your upload speed. Unfortunately, U.S. service providers have plans with high download speeds but only offer a small fraction of that speed for uploads. The speed is also hindered by the recipient's download speed. If you have an upload speed of 4Mbps but the recipient only has a download speed of 3Mbps, you won't be able to take full advantage of your speed.
Available Bandwidth
Similar to the network speeds, you can only use so much bandwidth at once. If you're also hosting a video conference in TeamViewer, downloading files in your browser, streaming video or playing an online game, the speed of all your online applications suffers. Turning off any other bandwidth-heavy applications increases the bandwidth dedicated to your TeamViewer file transfer.
Opening a Port
For transfer speeds that fall significantly short of your maximum, you can try opening a port on your router to allow TeamViewer traffic to pass through unimpeded. For the most part, TeamViewer uses HTTP ports -- ports 80 and 443. You can also set TCP port 5938 open for outgoing traffic. If you're using a firewall, allow TeamViewer to communicate through your firewall. Windows comes with a built-in firewall; you can manage the settings by opening Windows Firewall in the Control Panel.
Connection Types
If either computer involved in the transfer is connected via a wireless connection, the transfer speed isn't going to be at its peak. Wireless connections lose speed, with significant loss the farther you get from the signal source. Some routers also see a loss in speed due to power settings that reduce power usage and thus output. For the best possible connection and transfer speeds, connect both computers to the Internet via Ethernet cable.

How Do I Create a Hyperlink to a Zipped File?In Feburary 2016 19,
In Feburary 2016 19,
Upload the zipped file to your web server, into whatever directory or folder you'd like it to be. You can upload the file using your website hosting control panel or any basic FTP client software.
Save a copy of your web page to your hard drive--save just the page on which you want to create the link. You can save the file using your web browser, the web hosting control panel, or by downloading it with your FTP software.
Open your web page HTML file with a basic text editor such as Windows Notepad, NoteTab or Notepad++.
Select the location in your web page that you'd like to create the hyperlink. Remember that you are viewing the raw HTML code when it's open in a text editor, so you'll need to be sure you place your new hyperlink anywhere after the opening body tag (
), but before the closing body tag (
).
Craft your hyperlink using the full HTML path to your zipped file, like this:Zipped' rel='nofollow' target='_blank'>http://www.yourwebsite.com/folder/zipped.zip">Zipped File'yourwebsite.com' will of course by your own website domain name and extension.
'folder' will be the folder name into which you placed the zip file.
'zipped.zip' will be the actual name of the zipped file for which you are creating the hyperlink.
The words 'Zipped File' will be the words that show as linked on your web page, and they can be whatever you'd like. 'Click here to download this zipped file' for example, would be a nice descriptive phrase that tells people exactly what to do.
Save the changes to your web page file, then reload it onto your web server to make the changes live on your site.

How to Detect Connection Speed With JavaScriptIn Feburary 2016 18,
In Feburary 2016 18,
Open your web page to which you want to add the connection speed detection JavaScript in your text editor.
Add starting and ending script tags in the header area of the web page (after the starting
tag but before the ending
tag), for example:
Add the following code between the starting and ending script tags, replacing \'myimage.jpg\' with the file name of the image you want to use for the speed test. The \'?n=\' + Math.random() part of the address that is built and assigned to imageAddr tricks the web browser into fetching the image every time instead of using a locally cached version. Use an image with a file size of approximately 200 kilobytes.var imageAddr = \'myimage.jpg\' + \'?n=\' + Math.random() ;
Add the following code on the next line of the script to create the variables to store the test's start time, end time and download size. Set \'downloadSize\' to the size of the image file in bytes.var startTime, endTime
GO
var downloadSize = 200000 ;
Add the following code to set up the image that will be downloaded for the test. \'download\' is set up as an Image object. The action to capture the end of the download is assigned to activate when the image download completes. var download = new Image() ;
download.onload = function() {
endTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
showResults ()
GO
}
Add the following code that runs the speed test. The current time is captured into startTime. The image address being assigned to download.src starts the image download.startTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
download.src = imageAddr ;
Add the following function to the script that calculates displays the speed test results. First, it calculates the duration, converting milliseconds to seconds. Next, it converts the download size to bits, calculates the download speed, and converts the speed to kbps and Mbps. Finally, it pops up a message box with the results.function showResults () {
var duration = Math.round((endTime - startTime) / 1000) ;
var bitsLoaded = downloadSize * 8
GO
var speedBps = Math.round(bitsLoaded / duration)
GO
var speedKbps = (speedBps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
var speedMbps = (speedKbps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
alert (\'Your connection speed is: \n\' +
speedBps + \" bps\\n\" +
speedKbps + \" kbps\\n\" +
speedMbps + \" Mbps\\n\")
GO
}
Open the page in your browser, and test it to make sure the script works correctly. It may take a few seconds for the message box to pop up with the test results.

Open your web page to which you want to add the connection speed detection JavaScript in your text editor.
Add starting and ending script tags in the header area of the web page (after the starting
tag but before the ending
tag), for example:
Add the following code between the starting and ending script tags, replacing \'myimage.jpg\' with the file name of the image you want to use for the speed test. The \'?n=\' + Math.random() part of the address that is built and assigned to imageAddr tricks the web browser into fetching the image every time instead of using a locally cached version. Use an image with a file size of approximately 200 kilobytes.var imageAddr = \'myimage.jpg\' + \'?n=\' + Math.random() ;
Add the following code on the next line of the script to create the variables to store the test's start time, end time and download size. Set \'downloadSize\' to the size of the image file in bytes.var startTime, endTime
GO
var downloadSize = 200000 ;
Add the following code to set up the image that will be downloaded for the test. \'download\' is set up as an Image object. The action to capture the end of the download is assigned to activate when the image download completes. var download = new Image() ;
download.onload = function() {
endTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
showResults ()
GO
}
Add the following code that runs the speed test. The current time is captured into startTime. The image address being assigned to download.src starts the image download.startTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
download.src = imageAddr ;
Add the following function to the script that calculates displays the speed test results. First, it calculates the duration, converting milliseconds to seconds. Next, it converts the download size to bits, calculates the download speed, and converts the speed to kbps and Mbps. Finally, it pops up a message box with the results.function showResults () {
var duration = Math.round((endTime - startTime) / 1000) ;
var bitsLoaded = downloadSize * 8
GO
var speedBps = Math.round(bitsLoaded / duration)
GO
var speedKbps = (speedBps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
var speedMbps = (speedKbps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
alert (\'Your connection speed is: \n\' +
speedBps + \" bps\\n\" +
speedKbps + \" kbps\\n\" +
speedMbps + \" Mbps\\n\")
GO
}
Open the page in your browser, and test it to make sure the script works correctly. It may take a few seconds for the message box to pop up with the test results.

What Is a URL Search Hook?In Feburary 2016 14,
In Feburary 2016 14,
A web site's extension is the portion of the URL that is after the last '.' in the address. Examples are .com, .html and .htm. These extensions tell computers what protocol the browser should use to read the web page.
Usage
When the extension is unknown, such as a custom URL, the browser attempts to figure out which protocol to use. A search hook is implemented to determine how the computer should read the web page. Once the search hook has succeeded in reading the page, the new protocol is added to the search hook for future use.
Implementation
The command for a search hook is written into the computer's software as a line of code. The user does not need to perform any special command; the Internet browser will automatically begin to search for a protocol that will read the web page.

How to Find FTP InformationIn Feburary 2016 14,
In Feburary 2016 14,
Make sure that your Internet connection is secure and its speed is adequate; accessing, downloading and uploading files with an FTP requires a stable connection for accuracy.
Download and install an FTP client for easy management and access of files for your website and many others. Many free clients -- such as FileZilla and Core FTP (see 'Resources' below) -- are available. While FTP information can be accessed through your browser, the layout is unconventional and dated. For the most efficient use of your website's FTP, it is recommended that you get a client at some point.
Navigate to the target website by replacing the “http” in the URL to “ftp” in the specified client address bar. Provide your login credentials and port information if necessary. If you are using a browser, simply enter your URL with the “ftp” prefix in the address bar. Most website content is protected, so a login box will prompt you for your information after the page has finished loading.
Browse through the folders in your FTP client to access the files that are attached to the website. Right-click each individual file to open a list of options for that particular file. If you are using a browser to access a site's FTP, all of the folders will populate in one tree. Click on a folder to access the files and folders inside. Right-click each individual file to open a list of options similar to those that the client would offer.
Navigate to a folder that contains files you wish to upload to the website. For clients such as FileZilla, the local site browser is on the left side of the application. Right-click on a file to access a menu of options such as “Upload” or “Add to Queue”; files will be uploaded to the selected folder of a remote site or to the current FTP site. Unless you have an FTP add-on -- such as FireFTP (see 'Resources' below -- you cannot upload files to a target website from a browser.
Log out of the FTP client or close the browser when you are finished to prevent others from accessing your information.

How to Upload Files to a WebsiteIn Feburary 2016 12,
In Feburary 2016 12,
Download and install an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. Smart FTP, Filezilla, CuteFTP and Core FTP Light are some of the choices that you can consider. They all work in essentially the same way. Core FTP LE (light version) has everything you need, it is easy to install and it is free.
Visit your web host and check the Frequently Asked Questions section. Look for instructions on setting up an FTP program. Keep this information in an open browser window on your computer or write the information down so you will have it handy should you need it again. Write down the host IP URL, your username and password, and the name of the folder you will need to connect with to upload your files.
Install Core FTP or another FTP program, open it and create a project. You will need to supply a name for the project. Use the name of your website to keep things simple. Before you can connect to your Web host, you will need to enter all the information you retrieved from your Web host. On the left side of the programs interface you will enter the name of the directory where all your website files are located on your computer. On the right side of the program you will enter the folder you need to upload your files to. It will typically be named 'public html,' or something similar. Enter the names of these folders. If you want Core to remember your password each time you sign in to upload files, click the 'Remember Password' box. Ensure your connection type is set to FTP.
Click the 'Connect' button and your FTP software will connect to the Web host folder you need to upload your files to. Your website folder will appear, with contents displayed. To upload a file, all you need to do is double click. The file will transfer to your Web host and be available for viewing on the Web.
