How to Connect to an FTP SiteIn Feburary 2016 27,

In Feburary 2016 27,
Most public FTP sites don't require you to have an account, and instead allow you to log in anonymously. In most cases you won't be required to log in at all, while in others you must enter 'anonymous' as your username and your email address as your password. If the FTP site is restricted, which is often the case with commercial or university sites, you will be prompted to enter the username and password assigned to you by the site administrator.
Web Browser Access
Probably the simplest way to access an FTP site is with your Web browser. If you see a link to the FTP site on a Web page, just click the link. If you have only the FTP site address, enter it in your browser's address bar. Use the format ftp://ftp.domain.com. If the site requires a username or password, your browser prompts you for the information. Once you're at the site, click a folder to view its contents or click the link at the top of the page to go up a level. You can click a file to begin the download process. The main drawback to using your Web browser is that you can't upload files to the FTP site. For this, you will need an FTP client.
Windows File Explorer
If you use Windows, you already have an FTP client built into the operating system. File Explorer in Windows 8, or Windows Explorer in previous versions, doubles as both a file manager and an FTP client. Enter the FTP site address into the address bar using the format ftp://ftp.domain.com. Press 'Enter' to access the FTP site and views its files and directories. The advantage of using File Explorer is that you can drag and drop files to and from the FTP site. In addition, you can right-click anywhere in the right pane and select 'Add a Network Location' to begin a wizard that allows you to set up the FTP site as a permanent network drive.
Mac OS X
If you use a Mac, you can access an FTP site directly from a Finder window. Press 'Command-K' and then enter the FTP site address in the form ftp://ftp.gnu.org. OS X will open a new Finder window for the FTP site. You can drag files to and from the FTP site using this window.
Other FTP Clients
If you plan to do a lot of file transfers, or you need to manage several FTP sites, you may be better off using an FTP client application. FTP clients generally are made specifically for transferring files to and from FTP sites, and include features that often make them easier to use. Some of the free clients you can download include FileZilla, WinSCP and CyberDuck.
Command Line FTP
Although this method is seldom used, it's worth mentioning the command line. Back in the dark ages of the Internet, users connected with FTP sites by typing commands on a command line. You can still connect to FTP sites using the command line in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, but it helps if you know your way around a Unix/Linux environment. Also, you may need to modify your computer's firewall or anti-virus software settings to enable proper communication with the FTP site when you use the command line.

What Is the Port for Plesk? In Feburary 2016 21,

In Feburary 2016 21,
Plesk Panel is an application that serves as the centerpiece of an Internet website hosting service provider. The Web hosting server runs the Plesk Panel and allows customers to connect to their own dashboard on the server through Plesk. Once connected, customers can design websites, manage files and install new Internet applications on their pages. The Plesk Panel also allows the website host to manage customers, assign FTP accounts, enable development software and manage account billing.
About Plesk Ports
Plesk requires several different open ports, depending on the type of services you provide on the Web hosting server. For example, to allow FTP transfers, you must open ports 20 and 21. For website hosting services, you must open port 80. If you want to provide POP3 and SMTP mail services, you must open ports 25 and 110. The KB Parallels help files include a page that lists all ports and the services that correspond to each number. Determine which services you want to use to know what ports you need to open.
Opening Router Ports
Some routers provide a built-in firewall as an extra layer of protection. If you use a router on your server’s network, ensure that you open the ports on the router as well as the computer firewall. You can access your router’s administrator dashboard by typing the router’s IP address into any Internet browser address bar, on a computer that is connected to the router. From there, access the port forwarding area of the dashboard and manually type in the port forwarding rule for each Plesk port number you wish to open.
Opening Firewall Ports
The method for opening ports on the computer firewall varies depending on the type of firewall installed on your server. Firewall software allows you to configure rules and exceptions that you can use to manually open port numbers based on the services you use with Plesk. For example, if you use the built-in Windows Firewall, access the Firewall settings form the Security section of your computer and select “Allow a program through Windows Firewall.” Here you can “Add a Port” and configure the Plesk port numbers, instructing the firewall to allow traffic through for the specific services.

How to Remove a File From an FTP SiteIn Feburary 2016 08,

In Feburary 2016 08,
Click the Start button and click 'Run' to open a Run command box.
Type 'command' in the Run box, and press 'Enter.' Doing so will open a command prompt window.
Type 'ftp' in the command prompt window, followed by either the hostname or IP address of the FTP site you wish to log in to. If the site requires a user name and password for access, then you will be prompted to enter your login information.
Type 'cd' followed by the name of the directory on the FTP server that contains the file that you wish to delete.
Type 'delete,' followed by the name of the file that you wish to delete off the remote server. If the FTP site administrator has provided you with the appropriate file permissions to delete the file, then the file will be permanently removed from the server. If you don't have appropriate permissions to delete files on the server then you'll need to contact the FTP site's administrator for permission.
Type 'bye', and press 'Enter' to end your FTP connection.

What Is Port Triggering Used For on a Router? In Feburary 2016 06,

In Feburary 2016 06,
Routers use a network address translation (NAT) firewall to protect a network from unauthorized access over the Internet. The NAT firewall blocks incoming data transmissions by sealing the incoming data ports on the network. Port triggering temporarily opens these data ports when a LAN computer requires unrestricted access to the Internet.
Benefits
Port triggering differs from another method for opening incoming data ports known as port forwarding. With port forwarding, the router leaves the specified data ports open all the time. Port triggering, however, only opens the ports when a computer requests access to them. Also, unlike port forwarding, port triggering does not require LAN computers to have a static network address.
Considerations
You can enable port triggering through the router's configuration software. With port triggering, only one computer at a time can access the open port, whereas port forwarding permits multiple LAN computers to share a single open port.

Is it Better to Host Your Own Server or Lease Server Space? In Feburary 2016 04,

In Feburary 2016 04,
When you lease server space from a Web hosting company, the provider handles the important tasks of properly storing and maintaining the server. Web servers must be stored in special facilities and thoroughly maintained to ensure an extended lifespan and prevent problems like overheating. If you were to host your own server, you would need to set up the server at home or pay the fees required to store it at a dedicated server facility.
Ease of Expansion
With a leased server, expansion merely requires putting in a call to your hosting company and requesting whatever it is you need -- whether it's a faster processor, more memory, a large hard disk drive or a bigger database. If you purchase your own server, you are solely responsibly for making these upgrades, meaning you must know how to open up a server, remove deprecated components and replace them with newer, better-functioning modules.
Shorterm/Longterm Costs
Shared and dedicated servers may be leased for as little as $4.99 to $99.99 per month, depending on the server's specifications. To set up your own server, however, you would need to spend at least $500, if not much more, to cover the processors, memory cards and hard drives. This doesn't even take into consideration the fees associated with storing the server at a data center, assuming you were to take that route.
Cloud Computing
Another option is to pursue cloud computing, a revolutionary form of data management wherein everything -- including hardware, applications -- is provided through the Internet via what is known as a 'cloud.' It's slowly gaining popularity because, according to PC Magazine, it allows 'companies [to] spend more money on infrastructure and less money on the actual hardware.' One limiting factor, however, is that like with shared hosting, you are essentially 'at the mercy of the provider.'
