How to Set up Port Forwarding for a NetworkIn Feburary 2016 28,

In Feburary 2016 28,
Make a list of ports you need to forward. Most programs require their ports to be forwarded; if this is not done, information from these programs will not be seen by your local computer. If you know a program for which ports need to be forwarded, write it down. Afterwards, check the software manufacturer's website to find the port or series of ports along with the protocol type associated with your program/application of interest. Write this down as well.
Set up a static IP address on the computer for which ports will be forwarded. To set up a static IP address on a Mac OS X, simply click the apple icon on the top left corner of the screen, select 'System Preferences' and under 'Internet and Network,' select 'Network.' Select the network connection you are currently using and click 'Configure.' Click 'Configure IPv4' and select 'Manually.' The IP address you select should be similar to your router's IP address with the last number ranging range from 1-254. Typically, you can add 10 or more to the your router's last number. This should work in most cases as a static IP address. For instance, if your router's address is 192.168.1.1, you can choose 192.168.1.11 as your static IP address.
Start forwarding your ports by accessing your router's website. Open a web browser (Explorer, Safari or Firefox) and enter your router's IP address after the http://. This should lead you to your router's website. Locate the links which will lead you to Port Forwarding or Port Redirection. Once there, simply indicate the Program/Application Name, protocol type (TCP or IP) and port number(s) on both the public and private ports. You might need to check off a box to indicate that you would like to activate this port. Click 'OK' or 'Save' to save your settings.
Reconfigure your firewall so that you are able to open ports that are being blocked by your firewall. Alternatively, you can disable your firewalls and turn them on manually one at a time to see which firewall is blocking ports from entering your LAN.

How to Repair a Frost Free Yard HydrantIn Feburary 2016 27,

In Feburary 2016 27,
Adjust the hydrant seals. Worn linkages can cause a leak by not properly forcing the rubber shut off assembly into the valve seat. If the handle is nearly all the way down before you feel resistance caused by the plunger hitting the valve seat this may be the problem. Simply adjusting the mechanism at the top of the valve stem to extend it slightly might solve the problem. Make the adjustments in small increments to avoid damaging the valve assembly.
Repair the hydrant. Often the cause of a leaking hydrant is worn or damaged gaskets or seals in the valve assembly. These components can often be replaced without digging up the valve assembly.
Find a supplier for your brand of hydrant. Most hardware stores will have supplies as will well drillers in your area. Unless you can leave the hydrant dissembled for several days you will want to get replacement parts before starting work.
Unscrew the head assembly from the riser pipe. This might be difficult since it has likely been outside for many years and may be rusted tight. Liberal use of penetrating oil, hammer tapping, and long handles on the pipe wrenches can all help.
Pull up the connector rod. The seals and valve mechanism should come with it.
Inspect and replace those components that seem worn or deteriorated.
Reinsert the valve assembly and thread the head assembly onto the riser pipe. Be sure to use pipe dope on the threads and seals to aid in sealing.
Adjust the plunger seating pressure as noted above.

How to Connect to an FTP SiteIn Feburary 2016 27,

In Feburary 2016 27,
Most public FTP sites don't require you to have an account, and instead allow you to log in anonymously. In most cases you won't be required to log in at all, while in others you must enter 'anonymous' as your username and your email address as your password. If the FTP site is restricted, which is often the case with commercial or university sites, you will be prompted to enter the username and password assigned to you by the site administrator.
Web Browser Access
Probably the simplest way to access an FTP site is with your Web browser. If you see a link to the FTP site on a Web page, just click the link. If you have only the FTP site address, enter it in your browser's address bar. Use the format ftp://ftp.domain.com. If the site requires a username or password, your browser prompts you for the information. Once you're at the site, click a folder to view its contents or click the link at the top of the page to go up a level. You can click a file to begin the download process. The main drawback to using your Web browser is that you can't upload files to the FTP site. For this, you will need an FTP client.
Windows File Explorer
If you use Windows, you already have an FTP client built into the operating system. File Explorer in Windows 8, or Windows Explorer in previous versions, doubles as both a file manager and an FTP client. Enter the FTP site address into the address bar using the format ftp://ftp.domain.com. Press 'Enter' to access the FTP site and views its files and directories. The advantage of using File Explorer is that you can drag and drop files to and from the FTP site. In addition, you can right-click anywhere in the right pane and select 'Add a Network Location' to begin a wizard that allows you to set up the FTP site as a permanent network drive.
Mac OS X
If you use a Mac, you can access an FTP site directly from a Finder window. Press 'Command-K' and then enter the FTP site address in the form ftp://ftp.gnu.org. OS X will open a new Finder window for the FTP site. You can drag files to and from the FTP site using this window.
Other FTP Clients
If you plan to do a lot of file transfers, or you need to manage several FTP sites, you may be better off using an FTP client application. FTP clients generally are made specifically for transferring files to and from FTP sites, and include features that often make them easier to use. Some of the free clients you can download include FileZilla, WinSCP and CyberDuck.
Command Line FTP
Although this method is seldom used, it's worth mentioning the command line. Back in the dark ages of the Internet, users connected with FTP sites by typing commands on a command line. You can still connect to FTP sites using the command line in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, but it helps if you know your way around a Unix/Linux environment. Also, you may need to modify your computer's firewall or anti-virus software settings to enable proper communication with the FTP site when you use the command line.

How to Build a SnowmanIn Feburary 2016 23,

In Feburary 2016 23,
Test to see if you have 'packing snow,' which clumps together easily and isn't too wet. The snow must pack to make a snowman.
Shape a handful of snow into a ball. Continue adding more snow and packing the ball until it's too large to hold.
Place the ball on the snow in front of you and slowly roll it away from you. As more snow accumulates on the outside of your ball, pack the snow by pressing on it with your gloved hands.
Roll and pack the ball over and over until it is the size you want for the bottom of the snowman's body.
Repeat for the midsection and head. The bottom should be the biggest ball, and the top should be the smallest.
Pack some extra snow between the layers to make them stick together. Place sticks down the center where the sections meet if your snowman is having trouble standing erect.
Give the snowman a face. Use coal, rocks, buttons or anything dark and round for the eyes. A horizontal stick or twig will make a good mouth, and a carrot is fine for the pointy nose. If you don't have a carrot, a banana or a candy cane will do the job.
Cover the top of his head with an old plant for hair, or give him a knit hat to wear. Top hats will blow away unless secured.
Add arms, legs and other accessories. Push sticks into the sides of the middle section and hang old mittens on the ends, then place boots at the bottom for legs. Also consider adding items such as a shirt, a scarf or sunglasses.
