Determine the name of the server you wish yo log in to. Many times, this will be given to you by the person who is receiving or sending the file. For public access FTP sites, you can either search for them through an Internet search engine or 'guess' by replacing the 'www' in a web address with 'ftp.' For instance, you could try 'ftp.aol.com' as opposed to 'www.aol.com.'
Go to the command prompt for your operating system. For Windows, this means opening an MS-DOS window. Type 'ftp
,' where
is the name of the ftp server you are logging into, and press 'Enter.' Enter your username and password where requested. For public access servers, the username will almost always be 'anonymous' and the password your full email address.
Use the command 'dir' to list a directory's contents and 'cd' to change to a different directory until you find the file you want to receive or the directory your wish to transfer a file into.
Use either 'get
' or 'put
' to receive or to send the file.
Type 'bye' when the files have been transferred to end the connection.

What Do I Need to Make a Server?In Feburary 2016 29,
In Feburary 2016 29,
The first and most obvious thing you will need to have your own server is an Internet connection. This connection can be dedicated to the server or shared with other computers, however, there are a few things to consider when choosing an service plan for a server. The first is upstream speed. Because most Internet users download far more data than they upload to the Internet, most service plans have a drastically higher downstream speed than upstream speed. The amount needed will vary according to the type of server you wish to run. So it’s important to estimate your needs and, when shopping for service, read the fine print to ensure that the plan provides enough upstream bandwidth.
Static Internet Protocol (IP) Address
The other important consideration when shopping for service is how IP addresses are assigned. An IP address is a number that is used to identify a computer on the Internet. With most service plans, this number will often change each time a computer reconnects. This is called a Dynamic IP address. This works fine, unless you have a server that intends to have its own domain name. Domain names (such as www.ehow.com) must be looked up using a special service to translate them into a server’s IP address. However, if a server’s IP address is constantly changing, this can create problems when users try to look up your server by domain name. Therefore, it is important to purchase a Internet service plan that promises you a Static IP, one that does not change.
Dedicated Computer
While it’s quite possible to use a server computer as a desktop computer also, there are a number of reasons why this is not advisable. The biggest reason is security: servers are visible to the Internet in a way that a well-maintained desktop system usually isn’t. Running server software is essentially opening a window into a computer that is usually kept closed and locked.
Server Software
You will need software to serve the content you wish to serve. What you choose will depend on your own needs. If you wish to serve a website, the open source and very widely used program Apache is the most common. If you wish to serve an online game, you will need server software from the game’s publishers.
Security Software
Finally, and sadly, you will need security software. While you ought to have security software such as antivirus protection and a firewall running on every machine in your network, this becomes doubly important with a server. As mentioned above: running server software opens gateways into your computer that are normally left closed, and that makes it easier and more likely that your computer will be targeted by malicious hackers.

In Feburary 2016 27,
Start a new account with the web hosting service of your choice, but do not close your account with your current host. Otherwise, you risk permanently losing your website and email information.
Make a note of every email account hosted on your website. Write down each email address–and password if you want to keep them the same–or type them in a file and save the file. Keep this information private so that no one can access your email accounts without your permission.
Back up your website. Access the backup tool on your user panel with your current hosting service and select the options necessary to do a complete site backup, rather than any kind of partial backup. Save the resulting file on your computer.
Access the backup tool on your user panel with your new hosting service. Select the option to upload a complete site backup. Find your site backup, upload it and select the option to complete the backup upload process.
Create all the same email accounts you have on your current server on your new server. Use the passwords you saved in step 1 if you wish to keep them the same, or make up new passwords if you prefer. Be sure to use passwords that you will remember but that would be difficult for someone else to guess.

How to Troubleshoot FTP IssuesIn Feburary 2016 25,
In Feburary 2016 25,
Type the FTP server, your username and password into the appropriate fields to double check that you have not made any typing errors. Click the 'Connect' button or press 'Enter' to try once more.
Verify your FTP server address if you cannot make a connection. Some servers require you to type 'ftp.domain.com,' where 'domain.com' is the actual domain name. Other servers do not require the subdomain 'ftp.' Try both variations.
Add the domain name to your username. For example 'yourusename@domain.com' may work while simply 'yourusername' will not ('yourusername' and 'domain.com' are stand-ins for the actual values).
Download and install another FTP client, such as FileZilla or CuteFTP. Enter your server information and credentials to see if the new program can establish a connection.
Disable the Windows firewall, if it is enabled. Open the Start Menu and type 'Firewall' into the search box to bring up the Windows Firewall option. Click the 'Firewall' link and click 'Turn Windows Firewall On or Off.' Enter your password if prompted and click 'Turn off Windows Firewall' under each network connection before clicking 'OK.'

Secure server space to host your website and collect content you would like to be posted on your site. Now you are ready to transfer your files from your computer to the Web server space via FTP. Download Filezilla from the Web. Filezilla is a free FTP program which is downloaded onto your computer for use in connecting your computer files to your chosen server or Web host. The FTP upload of files to your website is often referred to as the 'back end' of Web design, as you are working 'behind the scenes', so to speak.
Once you have downloaded the Filezilla program, open it on your computer. Enter the required information for the transfer, including your website host's Web address, the port being used for the transfer, the server type, your Web address for the new site, and your account information -- including your password -- for the server. You may need to refer to your own records and/or make contact with your server for some of this information. Once you have entered this information into Filezilla, hit Enter, and it will connect you to the server which will host your site.

You will need the password for your server account when uploading files via FTP.
Once connected to your server's site via Filezilla, you will see your computer's files on the left side of the screen and the website files on the right side. Right-click a cursor over the file on the left you want to transfer, and then drag it over to the right side area of the screen where the server files are, then take your finger off the cursor. Name the file/page by entering the file or page name into the box that appears. Hit enter, and you now have a page visible to the public posted onto your website.
Fotolia.com'>
FTP transfers are done by dragging files with a mouse or cursor.
Name each page or file that you transfer via FTP with name patterns, lest you lose track of what is where within your Web directory shell. Too many files without organization makes an unmanageable site. I name all photo files in my website's directory with the prefix of 'photo' so I know it is a photo file. For instance, I would use photobeach.jpg instead of beach.jpg. Eventually, this will give you neat sections of your web directory with groupings such as photos, banners, videos and documents.

Photos are more managable in a website directory if labeled with a 'photo' prefix.

How to Detect Connection Speed With JavaScriptIn Feburary 2016 18,
In Feburary 2016 18,
Open your web page to which you want to add the connection speed detection JavaScript in your text editor.
Add starting and ending script tags in the header area of the web page (after the starting
tag but before the ending
tag), for example:
Add the following code between the starting and ending script tags, replacing \'myimage.jpg\' with the file name of the image you want to use for the speed test. The \'?n=\' + Math.random() part of the address that is built and assigned to imageAddr tricks the web browser into fetching the image every time instead of using a locally cached version. Use an image with a file size of approximately 200 kilobytes.var imageAddr = \'myimage.jpg\' + \'?n=\' + Math.random() ;
Add the following code on the next line of the script to create the variables to store the test's start time, end time and download size. Set \'downloadSize\' to the size of the image file in bytes.var startTime, endTime
GO
var downloadSize = 200000 ;
Add the following code to set up the image that will be downloaded for the test. \'download\' is set up as an Image object. The action to capture the end of the download is assigned to activate when the image download completes. var download = new Image() ;
download.onload = function() {
endTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
showResults ()
GO
}
Add the following code that runs the speed test. The current time is captured into startTime. The image address being assigned to download.src starts the image download.startTime = (new Date()).getTime() ;
download.src = imageAddr ;
Add the following function to the script that calculates displays the speed test results. First, it calculates the duration, converting milliseconds to seconds. Next, it converts the download size to bits, calculates the download speed, and converts the speed to kbps and Mbps. Finally, it pops up a message box with the results.function showResults () {
var duration = Math.round((endTime - startTime) / 1000) ;
var bitsLoaded = downloadSize * 8
GO
var speedBps = Math.round(bitsLoaded / duration)
GO
var speedKbps = (speedBps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
var speedMbps = (speedKbps / 1024).toFixed(2)
GO
alert (\'Your connection speed is: \n\' +
speedBps + \" bps\\n\" +
speedKbps + \" kbps\\n\" +
speedMbps + \" Mbps\\n\")
GO
}
Open the page in your browser, and test it to make sure the script works correctly. It may take a few seconds for the message box to pop up with the test results.
