How to FTP filesIn Feburary 2016 30,

In Feburary 2016 30,
Determine the name of the server you wish yo log in to. Many times, this will be given to you by the person who is receiving or sending the file. For public access FTP sites, you can either search for them through an Internet search engine or 'guess' by replacing the 'www' in a web address with 'ftp.' For instance, you could try 'ftp.aol.com' as opposed to 'www.aol.com.'
Go to the command prompt for your operating system. For Windows, this means opening an MS-DOS window. Type 'ftp
,' where
is the name of the ftp server you are logging into, and press 'Enter.' Enter your username and password where requested. For public access servers, the username will almost always be 'anonymous' and the password your full email address.
Use the command 'dir' to list a directory's contents and 'cd' to change to a different directory until you find the file you want to receive or the directory your wish to transfer a file into.
Use either 'get
' or 'put
' to receive or to send the file.
Type 'bye' when the files have been transferred to end the connection.

How to Set up Port Forwarding for a NetworkIn Feburary 2016 28,

In Feburary 2016 28,
Make a list of ports you need to forward. Most programs require their ports to be forwarded; if this is not done, information from these programs will not be seen by your local computer. If you know a program for which ports need to be forwarded, write it down. Afterwards, check the software manufacturer's website to find the port or series of ports along with the protocol type associated with your program/application of interest. Write this down as well.
Set up a static IP address on the computer for which ports will be forwarded. To set up a static IP address on a Mac OS X, simply click the apple icon on the top left corner of the screen, select 'System Preferences' and under 'Internet and Network,' select 'Network.' Select the network connection you are currently using and click 'Configure.' Click 'Configure IPv4' and select 'Manually.' The IP address you select should be similar to your router's IP address with the last number ranging range from 1-254. Typically, you can add 10 or more to the your router's last number. This should work in most cases as a static IP address. For instance, if your router's address is 192.168.1.1, you can choose 192.168.1.11 as your static IP address.
Start forwarding your ports by accessing your router's website. Open a web browser (Explorer, Safari or Firefox) and enter your router's IP address after the http://. This should lead you to your router's website. Locate the links which will lead you to Port Forwarding or Port Redirection. Once there, simply indicate the Program/Application Name, protocol type (TCP or IP) and port number(s) on both the public and private ports. You might need to check off a box to indicate that you would like to activate this port. Click 'OK' or 'Save' to save your settings.
Reconfigure your firewall so that you are able to open ports that are being blocked by your firewall. Alternatively, you can disable your firewalls and turn them on manually one at a time to see which firewall is blocking ports from entering your LAN.

How to Start a Business Offering Your Own Web ServerIn Feburary 2016 22,

In Feburary 2016 22,
Research various Web hosting providers that offer reseller accounts for dedicated or virtual private server hosting. Thousands of Web server providers exist on the Web; however, few actually maintain their own servers or data centers. For information on Web server hosting providers, visit websites like WebHostingTalk or ResellerPremium. These types of sites offer insight into server companies and the plans they offer. When researching dedicated or virtual private server hosting companies, review comments made by other resellers regarding reliability, pricing plans and support for partners or resellers.
Subscribe to and purchase a server reseller-hosting plan. When subscribing to a plan, consider paying for a full year of reseller hosting in advance, as you will probably receive a discount on the wholesale rate plan.
Learn the management interface that the server provider uses with its system. The management interface is a crucial component of your Web server business and is where you assign, configure and maintain customer server accounts. Create a few sample accounts and configure two or three test servers to learn how to perform the tasks quickly and efficiently. Once customers begin ordering hosting services from your company, they will expect quick configuration and use of their servers.
Publish a domain name that identifies your company as a web server provider. Create a professional website for the business or hire a Web designer to do the work for you. When creating the website, list detailed information on the types and configurations of the Web servers you offer, hosting plan information and pricing information. Provide information on the types of operating systems available, bandwidth usage policies and acceptable uses for the Web servers. To avoid potential legal issues, do not allow website owners to use the servers to display pornography, facilitate transfers of copyrighted material or violate and laws.
Develop a payment processing system for the website. Create an online form for users to submit billing and payment information. Alternatively, have them submit contact information and then call them for needed payment details.
Advertise your Web server company on as many high-volume websites as possible. Alternatively, purchase ads or advertising credits from major traffic-producing sites like Google, LinkShare or DoubleClick. Keep in mind that to drive customers to your site, you must create as much exposure for your new Web business as possible.
Receive orders for Web server hosting accounts and process the payments. Assist the customer in setting up the dedicated or virtual private server as needed.

How to Make Money Hosting PC Game ServersIn Feburary 2016 16,

In Feburary 2016 16,
Decide on the type of server you want to use. You can use your computer as a server, but once you shut down the computer, no one can use it. A dedicated server is in use 24-7 and will be unavailable for your own personal use.
Find a game to host by contacting developers or programmers working on games. If you want to court a large company like Blizzard, then you need to have large servers that can host a large-scale game. If you plan on courting a small company, then you don't need such a large system.
Figure out how you plan to charge. If you are working with a large company, they will likely lease your servers for their game; that will be the primary source of revenue. If you host a small scale or even local game, then you can charge people a monthly fee to play.
Create your pay-for-access system by working with your Internet service provider or hosting company. They both have the ability to set up a username and password system for either a membership section of your website, which you can provide access to your server, or directly with the server itself for a limited time. This will give only paying customers access to the server and the game.
Publicize your gaming space. If you are hosting a local game, then you will need to publicize your business in order to get people to come and play the game. The most common ways of publicizing products are advertising, social media and news coverage.
Upgrade the servers when needed. If you want to continue making money, then you will need to upgrade your servers when the number of people gets too large or the games take up too much memory on the server.

How to Troubleshoot AirPort IssuesIn Feburary 2016 15,

In Feburary 2016 15,
Check the wire connections at your AirPort's base station. First check to be sure that the unit is getting power and turned on. Swap out the Ethernet cord that connects to the base station for a cord that you know works.
Determine whether the AirPort issues are affecting one computer or all of the computers on the network. If the problem is on the entire network, trying turning off the AirPort base station for a few minutes. You should also restart all of your computers while you're waiting to power up the base station.
Open up the System Preferences by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then go into the 'Network' preferences. Verify that your AirPort card is set up to connect to the Internet as required by your Internet service provider. You may only need to change your 'location' back to one of your saved settings.
Perform a 'hard reset' by pressing and holding the reset button on your AirPort base. This button is located in different areas depending on the model, but it is a small button that you need to push with a pencil tip or paper clip. Be sure to hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds or until the LED light starts to flash.
Reconnect your computer to the base station with an Ethernet cord and reconfigure your wireless network. Use the AirPort Setup Assistant, which is located in the 'Utilities' subsection of your 'Applications' folder, to set up your AirPort base station. You may need to refer to the account information provided to you by your ISP.
Check to be sure that your AirPort card is installed correctly. The card will most likely only be a problem if you're using an older Mac that didn't come with the card already installed. Be sure to turn off and unplug the computer before you open it up to check the card.

How to Check if a Folder Exists in Vb.NetIn Feburary 2016 10,

In Feburary 2016 10,
Type 'Dim pathName As String' in your VB.NET code to define a string variable to hold the path to the folder that you want to look for. This string variable is called 'pathName.' As an example, set the value of the string variable 'pathName' to 'C:\TestFolder.' This can be implemented using the following code; 'pathName = 'C:\TestFolder'.'
Type 'Imports System.IO' in the first line of your code page to import the 'System.IO' library into your VB.net code. The 'System.IO' is a .NET framework class library that is available to all .NET based code. As the code is being developed in VB.NET, this library is also automatically available for use to the developer. A class library is a collection of classes with various functions that programmers can use in their software applications. The 'DirectoryInfo' class is a part of the 'System.IO' class library that exposes functions for creating and moving through directories and sub-directories.
Type the line 'Directory.Exists(pathName)' to use the 'Exists' function of the 'DirectoryInfo class' to check if the 'C:\TestFolder' folder exists on your computer. The 'Exists' function will return a true boolean value if the folder exists, and it will return a false boolean value if the folder does not exist. To catch this boolean value, define a boolean variable by using the following code line: 'Dim answer As Boolean.' Use this 'answer' variable to accept the return value of the 'Exists' function by using the following code line: ' answer = Directory.Exists(pathName).'
Build and compile your code by clicking on the 'Project' option on the top tool bar and then clicking on 'Build.' Execute the code by clicking on the 'Debug' option on the top tool bar and then clicking 'Run.' The VB.net code will execute, check if the 'C:\TestFolder' exists on your computer and return an appropriate true or false value.

What is Web Hosting?In Feburary 2016 09,

In Feburary 2016 09,
Web hosting is the method in which surfers of the web can successfully browse the Internet. A web server is a computer that sends the information for a personal or a business site to the Internet. Web hosting companies provide servers to its clients with the options of presenting information, files, pictures and bandwidth for the traffic its website brings in. This is a convenient technique for people to place ideas, products or personal touches on the World Wide Web.
Significance
The purpose for web hosting is practicality. A person with no website experience can create a meaningful site just like a knowledgeable professional. You do not need a web host to create a site linked to the Internet. However, setting up a server from your personal PC takes in-depth understanding that most people do not want to take the time to learn. That is why web-hosting companies provide simple access to the Internet. Anyone can create a site and have it viewed by millions.
Types
There are several styles of web hosting services. This depends on the type of website you have created. Websites that are more complex contain scripts, user generated information or an automated system requires CGI or PHP scripts. This method to have your script properly displayed is available by some companies while others do not offer this technique.
Free website hosting is rare. This style has advertisements in the form of banners or pop-ups. The free companies offer limited functions for clients. Typically, a person that has does not require large traffic and space or involve scripts uses this type of service.
Dedicated hosting is a method in which the client has free range of their website and functionality. The service is unshared, which will give the business or person more bandwidth, which leads to higher traffic margins. Flexibility is the key when using a dedicated server. You will be able to choose your hardware and operating system for your special needs. This gives you complete control over the server. You are required to have in-depth knowledge of web hosting services before you can completely use a dedicated web hosting company.
Shared hosting is the most common style for businesses and personal use. This is when your website is on a server with a couple of hundred others. You upload your website through a browser or an FTP. Then you can make changes on your website directly from the server's control panel. Shared hosting offers a setup for any scripts your website requires. In addition, they will not apply advertisements to your website.
Benefits
When you run a website, you will need a domain name for others to find you. Your webpage is linked to this address. Most companies that require payment for their services offers you to choose a domain name free of charge. Some may ask for a small yearly fee to have the domain name of your choice. In addition, using a web hosting server allows you to have the freedom of allowing your content to be seen on the World Wide Web. You can have the benefit of having your company or personal page put on one search engine or several different ones.
Analysis
Choosing a web hosting company may be a difficult task. There are several functions and considerations that you should be aware. Most companies provide a list of its benefits on the company's webpage. However, it may be difficult to understand what it is that you are actually receiving from them.
A business website requires extensive scripts to run. This includes payment methods, forms to fill out and pictures to show your products. A successful business should have plenty of bandwidth to keep up with the traffic. They should also have a simple to manage control panel where you can change what you need and leave quickly. Time is money and the simplest options are required. You will also need to decide if your company is worth a dedicated server or if a shared server will be enough for your growing business.
A personal website does not need much consideration. Blogs, family or friend pictures and information that you wish to share with the world is usually the normal webpage. You could also have a form or another method where people can share their thoughts, like a guest book. A form is a simple script but you will need to have your web host be able to run scripts. Free or shared web hosting services are capable of running a personal site. Remember, free hosting companies often require advertisements on your page.

What Is 'Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation?'In Feburary 2016 09,

In Feburary 2016 09,
Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation runs under the process name 'audiodg.exe' and is a component of the Microsoft Windows Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. The file runs the audio engine for Windows, which allows third party code from vendor audio applications to run sound in the computer system. The process is not crucial to basic computer functions.
Process Purpose
The process ensures that additional audio through a third party vendor is not lost in the Windows coding process, therefore allowing computer users to listen to audio without interruption. The audiodg.exe process also handles Digital Rights Management (DRM), which in requires that some audio samples go through a protection process to prevent illegal copying.
File Removal
While the audiodg.exe file will not harm your computer or affect running programs, some users may wish to disable the process if the file is using too much memory or consuming available computer resources. To remove the file, launch the Task Manager, click the 'Process' tab and locate the file under the name Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation. From here, you will be able to disable the program. The process will relaunch when the computer restarts or reboots, unless you also remove it from the Startup folder.
Virus Alert
The audiodg.exe application is not a virus. However, since it's an executable file, it's possible for malware, trojans or viruses to hide inside the file name and infiltrate your system. Users can avoid potentially dangerous issues by updating anti-virus programs and running scans regularly. Also note that the Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation application only runs with Windows 8, 7 and Vista. Therefore, users who see the process on an earlier version of Windows should immediately treat the file as a virus and remove it.

What Are Database Applications?In Feburary 2016 07,

In Feburary 2016 07,
Database applications are used to search, sort, calculate, report and share information. Databases can also contain code to perform mathematical and statistical calculations on the data to support queries submitted by users. Database applications provide security by restricting access to data based upon user names and passwords. Most database applications are customized with a database programming language to automate specific types of work.
Accounting Applications
An accounting system is a custom database application used to manage financial data. Custom forms are used to record assets, liabilities, inventory and the transactions between customers and suppliers. The income statements, balance sheets, purchase orders and invoices generated are custom reports based upon information that is entered into the database. Accounting applications can run on a single computer suitable for a small business or in a networked shared environment to accommodate the needs of multiple departments and locations in larger organizations. 'Microsoft Money,' 'Quicken,' 'QuickBooks' and 'Peachtree' are accounting systems built upon database applications.
CRM Applications
A customer relationship management system (CRM) is another example of a database application that has been customized to manage the marketing, sales, and support relationships between a business and it's customers. The ultimate goal is to maximize sales, minimize costs and foster strategic customer relationships. Simple contact management programs such as 'ACT,' or the task manager in Microsoft's 'Outlook' can be customized to suit the needs of individuals and small businesses. 'SAP,' 'Salesforce.com,' and Oracle's 'Siebel' are robust CRM database applications suitable for larger enterprises.
Web Applications
Many contemporary web sites are built using several database applications simultaneously as core components. Most retail store Web sites including 'Bestbuy.com,' and 'Amazon.com' use database systems to store, update and present data about products for sale. These Web sites also combine an accounting database system to record sales transactions and a CRM database application to incorporate feedback and drive a positive customer experience. The popular Web-based 'Facebook' application is essentially a database built upon the 'MySQL' database system and is an indication of the increasing usage of database applications as foundations for Web-based applications.

How Does a Server Work?In Feburary 2016 06,

In Feburary 2016 06,
The basic function of a server is to listen in on a port for incoming network requests, and a good demonstration of this is the interaction between a Web server and browser. Although to a user the process is instantaneous, or nearly so, when he clicks a link while surfing the Web, several things are taking place behind the scenes: the request for the Web page is transmitted to the corresponding Web server, the server fetches and assembles the Web page and retransmits it using a protocol like HTTP, and, finally, the user's browser receives the data, converts it, and displays the page to him.
Understanding the Technology
Depending on the type of server being set up, a server-class machine with specialized hardware is usually needed. Rather than a hard drive like most desktops have, servers use a data storage system known as Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or RAID for short. As the name implies, RAID systems are actually several disk drives configured to act like one. This improves efficiency, and if one disk fails, the array continues to function with little or no loss of data. Commercial servers also need fast processors, enough RAM to service the estimated number of requests, and an uninterrupted power supply. Many organizations have redundancies built into their system to accommodate failover; that is, if one server goes down, the standby server takes over immediately.
Types of Servers
Some of the most common servers in use today are database servers, application servers, mail servers and Web servers. As the name indicates, a database server provides the services and connections for storing, organizing and searching enterprise data. An application server, also called middleware, is the glue that holds the entire system together; it provides the runtime environment for applications and seamlessly coordinates things between the applications and database. Without mail servers, email would not get delivered; as bad or worse to go down would be Web servers, which are what allow people to surf the Web. Other types of critical servers in use are FTP servers, print servers, proxy servers, file servers and domain-name servers, to name a few.
Setting Up a Server
Almost any computer can be set up as a server. Many people use slightly obsolete computers to set up their own network servers at home using operating systems like Linux that aren't resource-intensive -- some don't even have graphical user interfaces -- and know that you don't need newer machines to make good servers. Some folks even set up Web servers and use it to host their own site, and the remarkable thing is that this can be done on a shoestring budget given that most of the software you will need is open source and free. Also, unless you're planning on having Web traffic approaching that of Amazon or Google, an old computer should be powerful enough for your server needs. There are some good, easy to understand tutorials on the Web to help you get started (see links in Resources).
