How to Make a Hit Counter in DreamweaverIn Feburary 2016 18,
In Feburary 2016 18,
Navigate to your Web host's homepage and see if they offer free hit counters. If they don't, go to another Web host that does. Bravenet, for example, offers free hit counters and other Web tools even if you don't have a host account with them (see Resources).
Click the link to the hit counter tool. You may need to register with the Web host in order to download the code, but the registration should be free. If not, look elsewhere. Bravenet's hit counter is free.
Click the button to create a new hit counter. You will be prompted to enter a name for the counter and provide the URL of the page you want to add the counter to.
Choose settings and then the look for your counter.
Select (highlight) and copy the Javascript code the Web host puts on the screen for you.
Open Dreamweaver and open the Web page you want to add the hit counter to.
View the HTML code for your page by clicking the 'CODE' button at the top of the window, then click at the location where you want the counter to appear. Usually counters are placed at the bottom of the page above the closing 'BODY' tag.
Select 'Paste' from the Edit menu and the code for the hit counter will be inserted. Save changes, upload the page to your Web server and view it in your Web browser to test.
Use a Free PHP Script
Use your Web browser to download a free PHP hit counter script from the Internet, such as the one at phpjunkyard.com (see Resources).
Go into your site in Dreamweaver and create a new folder in your local files list called 'counter.'
Place the PHP script and any files that came with it in this folder and read the instructions that come with the script for any special customization steps you need to take. Sometimes this information is on the Web page before you download, or it's a 'readme' file included in the download.
Open the hit counter PHP file in Dreamweaver. Change to 'CODE' view if necessary. There should be very clear instructions from the programmer at the top of the file about what variables you need to customize.
Make any necessary changes to the PHP code following the programmer's instructions. Save and close the file.
Open the Web page you want to add the counter to and save it with the extension .php instead of htm or .html. To run PHP on your page, you need this file extension or the commands will be ignored. View the HTML code on this file.
Click at the location where you want the hit counter to appear (anywhere above the closing 'BODY' tag), and paste in a PHP call to the hit counter file according to the instructions that came with your script. The code would look something like:
</script'>http://www.YOUR_DOMAIN.com/counter/gcount.php'><!--//--></script>.
Add a link back to the programmer's website under the counter (it's the considerate thing to do if you're using someone else's script for free), save changes to the file, then upload the php Web page and the counter folder to your Web server.
View the files on your Web server in Dreamweaver by selecting 'Remote Site' from the top of the site files box on the right. If the instructions for your hit counter script say to change file permissions on any of the script files, right-click the file name and choose 'Set Permissions' from the pop-up menu.
Make the changes to the 'Set Permissions' screen and click 'OK.'
Return to 'Local View' in your site files list and double-check the Web page that will have the hit counter to make sure you have the PHP command correct, then save, upload the file to the server and use your Web browser to view the page and test the hit counter.

How to Troubleshoot AirPort IssuesIn Feburary 2016 15,
In Feburary 2016 15,
Check the wire connections at your AirPort's base station. First check to be sure that the unit is getting power and turned on. Swap out the Ethernet cord that connects to the base station for a cord that you know works.
Determine whether the AirPort issues are affecting one computer or all of the computers on the network. If the problem is on the entire network, trying turning off the AirPort base station for a few minutes. You should also restart all of your computers while you're waiting to power up the base station.
Open up the System Preferences by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then go into the 'Network' preferences. Verify that your AirPort card is set up to connect to the Internet as required by your Internet service provider. You may only need to change your 'location' back to one of your saved settings.
Perform a 'hard reset' by pressing and holding the reset button on your AirPort base. This button is located in different areas depending on the model, but it is a small button that you need to push with a pencil tip or paper clip. Be sure to hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds or until the LED light starts to flash.
Reconnect your computer to the base station with an Ethernet cord and reconfigure your wireless network. Use the AirPort Setup Assistant, which is located in the 'Utilities' subsection of your 'Applications' folder, to set up your AirPort base station. You may need to refer to the account information provided to you by your ISP.
Check to be sure that your AirPort card is installed correctly. The card will most likely only be a problem if you're using an older Mac that didn't come with the card already installed. Be sure to turn off and unplug the computer before you open it up to check the card.

Browse FTP Sites Using An FTP Client
Download an FTP program to your Mac or PC. Filezilla Client is a good option for new users and it is free.
Launch Filezilla and under the 'host' box at the top of the screen type in the URL for the FTP. For example 'testsite.com.' Note that you do not need to enter in the 'ftp://' information. Click on the 'quickconnect' button. If a username and password is required, enter them in the provided boxes and then hit 'quickconnect.'
Click on the word 'Server' at the top of the FTP program and then choose 'Search Remote Files.'
Leave the 'search directory' box as it is when the new box appears. It should have '/' already inserted. Next to the 'filename' and 'contains' boxes, enter in the name of the file you are searching for. As an example, if you want to find the 'index.php' file for a website, you would type the full filename 'index.php' or simply 'index' to find all index files.
Click 'search' once you have entered the file name. All available files for download will appear in the larger-sized box at the bottom of the window. You can also search the site just as you would in a browser by clicking on each folder once the site's folders are displayed after clicking on 'quickconnect.'

Browse the site by clicking on each folder, just as you would on the folders of your computer. You can browse through main, sub, sub-sub and other folders as you require.
Click on the back and forward buttons on your browser to bounce back and forth through folders (just as you would when browsing websites).

How to Install an FTP Server on an Apache Web Server in Windows XPIn Feburary 2016 12,
In Feburary 2016 12,
Download the latest release of Apache server from the official site. The link to the Apache FTP service is below:
mina.apache.org/ftpserver/downloads.html
Install the download file by double-clicking the file. Follow the prompts that asks for a location to place the installation files. This can be any local directory on the server.
Start the service in Windows as a service. If you don't set Apache as a service, it does not start when the server is reboot. This means the Apache server does not server FTP pages until it's manually started. Click the Windows \'Start\' button and select \'Run.\' Type \'cmd\' into the text box and press the \'Enter\' key.
Type \'bin\service install\' into the command prompt. This starts the FTP service in Windows so host files are served to web browsers.

How to Transfer File via SSH Shell AccessIn Feburary 2016 05,
In Feburary 2016 05,
Open the SSH Access client. If you have not installed an SSH client, there are many available. PuTTY is the most notable, freely available terminal emulation programs available.
Connect to your remote server. In a graphical environment, this will simply be a matter of clicking connect and entering the appropriate hostname. In the instance of PuTTY, you'll have to manually open an SFTP session by typing 'psftp [hostname]' where '[hostname]' is the name or IP address of the server you want to connect to.
Enter your username and password as necessary. You may have to coordinate this with the network administrator.
Initiate the file transfer. Depending on whether you have a graphical interface or PuTTY's command line interface will change how you initiate the transfer. In PuTTY, you'll want to utilize the commands 'put [local filename] [remote filename]' (upload) and 'get [remote filename] [local filename]'. In an GUI, you'll simply click and drag files between the local and remote machine.
Close the connection. To remain in the program, but terminate the session, type 'close'. To exit out entirely, type 'quit'.
